CLC5404 Fashion and Visuality
Prof. Natalia S.H. CHAN (洛楓)
Monday: 6:45-9:30pm
Venue: LHC G06
This course introduces students to the visualization and spectatorship of fashion culture. Our focus is to examine how fashion contributes to the visuality of image culture in the postmodern world, and how different notions of viewing mediate our sense of perception and the perspective system in everyday life. Not only do we explore the media representation of fashion in catwalk, photography, printing culture, popular music, video-making, film, dance, and stage performance, but also the interaction between the viewers and the viewed. Besides, we also study the history theory of both western and Chinese fashion as well as their interrelationships with body, identity, gender, class, and racial formations. Each class meeting consists of lecturing, screening, students’ presentation and open discussion. Evaluation bases on a term paper and students’ presentation.
