Life born in Thornton, Yorkshire, but undoubtedly of Celtic blood father: poor but eccentric and domineering, clergyman, wrote and published several volumes of undistinguished religious verse and prose 1820, the family moved to the little village of Haworth, Yorkshire, in northern England mother died in 1821, leaving 5 girls and 1 boy, Anne the youngest mother’s sister came to live to care for them, but no substitute, children grew up wild and independent 1824, all the girls except Anne, sent to a charity school (the two elder sister worsened in health, brought home and soon died) (Charlotte and Emily) brought home, educated by their father, little formal schooling, but read widely and wrote cycles of stories with imagination 1831, Roe Head School, a year 1835, assistant teacher (took Emily with her, but Emily’s health declined and sent home) 2 years, left 3 years, (with Emily) teachers and governesses (intermittently) 1842, 9 months, Brussels to study French (with the money provided by their aunt) 1843, teacher in Brussels (Emily returned home after finished studying) left after falling in love with her married employer 1845, Charlotte discovered the manuscript of Emily’s poems, persuaded her to have them published. All three sisters contributed to a small joint volume, entitled “Poems by Currer, Ellis and Action Bell” 1846, published (at the expense of the sisters), sold only 2 copies, each then started novel writing The Professor, refused till after her death undiscouraged, began Jane Eyre 1847, published Jane Eyre, an immediate success with both readers and most of the critics 1847, a joint book (3 books for Charlotte, Emily and Anne) (Emily and Anne had been more successful in getting their first novels published, all under pseudonyms) Emily: Wuthering Heights Anne: Agne
