Engineering Trade Study AME 40463: Senior Design Project Nathaniel F. Barbera October 11, 2006 Introduction This trade study was done in order to influence the design choices of the friction heating elements and spring that enacts the normal force. This study will determine the most efficient materials to use in the heating element as well as the dimensions and specifications of the spring used to create the required normal force between the two friction elements. The friction material choice was made by mainly comparing material properties and experimental data to theoretical information. Once this was completed, the necessary normal force was calculated from this and other information. Using this number for the normal force, a spring was then designed that will apply the necessary load to the rotating friction element. Analysis The first deliverable in the trade study was to determine the best/most feasible materials for use as the friction heating elements. There were three design variables involved in this selection. They were the coefficient of friction between the two materials, the respective thermal conductivities of each material and the maximum working temperature that could be reached by each material during friction. The melting point of each respective material was the only major constraint, as we could not afford to have the material melt before it reached the necessary temperature. The state variables are the lists of the best options for each design variable. Lists were also made in order to design within the constraints laid out earlier. These lists were made from many different sources of information, including multiple websites. The coefficient of friction charts that were used can be found in Appendices 1a and 1b, respectively. The coefficient of friction should be maximized in order to get the highest energy dissipation in the form of heat. There were also multiple charts used to determine the thermal conductivities. The
