PORTS The Puducherry Port is situated in the East Coast between two major ports viz., Chennai and Tuticorin. Puducherry Port is at about 150 K.M south of Chennai Port. The Port is vested with good depths (10m depth available at 1.2 K.M and 15m depth at 2.5 K.M from shore) for anchoring DWT Vessels. The city has also good infrastructure facilities like reliable power supply, rail/road links, good communication and banking facilities. In the light of new liberalization policy formulated by the Govt. of India in the year 1991, the Govt. of Puducherry proposed to develop the Port Sector through Private investment on BOT basis. Since mid 2000, there has been a steady rise in the volume of traffic handled at Puducherry Port. Starting with the export of molasses, a number of new cargos like sugar, cement, edible oil, chemicals, oil cakes, and timber are being handled through this port. An electro-mechanical weighbridge of 60-ton capacity was commissioned at the New Port to facilitate weighment of cargo by port users. This has resulted in the additional revenue to this department. The CONCORE under a licensing agreement has set up an Inland Container depot (ICD) to cater to the needs of EXIM Cargo for the benefit of local industries. As required by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) convention relating to International Shipping and Port Security (ISPS), the department has prepared a Port Facility security Plan (PFSP) through the Indian register of shipping (IRS) and the same has been approved by the Directorate General of Shipping, Govt. of India. In compliance of the plan, the department has procured and installed various electronic monitoring devices/equipments and other security equipments. In order to prevent erosion of the shoreline along the coast of Puducherry, the port has taken up the implementation of a scheme titled” Beach nourishment” for which necessary machineries like Booster pump, engine and pipe lines have been procured and installed.
