//.PROGRAMME 2 SEPTEMBER 2010 A-BLOCK SOUTH THEATRES //. PRESENTATION ABSTRACTS Session 1: 10.30am – 12.30pm Lecture Theatre A5 COLLEGE OF EDUCATION 10.30 – 10.45am Annie Southern – Health Sciences, PhD Candidate “Madness or Mental Illness: What’s the difference?” The presentation looks at the differences in my PhD research participants’ minds between ‘madness’ and ‘mental illness.’ The language of ‘madness’ or craziness, rather than ‘mental illness’, is usually used by participants to describe historically the early part of their journey through mental distress. ‘Madness’ is, for the participants, an amorphous state of dislocation from normalcy and covers a multitude of aberrant behaviour. ‘Mental illness’, for the participants, is seen clearly as an ascribed condition based largely on the expertise of professionals and reliant upon the diagnosis of psychiatric disorders based on Diagnostic and Statistical Manual classifications. The history of treatment of mental distress in the Western world, plus information on kaupapa Maori approaches to mental distress, is reviewed. The role of diagnosis as a fulcrum for the transformation of the participants’ experiences from amorphous ‘madness’ to categorised ‘mental illness’ is examined, as is the way in which seeing themselves as ‘mentally ill’ rather than ‘mad’ affects the participants’ sense of identity once they are in treatment for their mental distress. 10.50 – 11.05am Nichol Gully - Education, Masters Candidate Nichol.gully@pg.canterbury.ac.nz “Kia Whita- Acceralating Maori language learning” This presentation will discusses the adaption and development of an approach to teaching the Māori language named ‘Kia Whita’ (Burn Fervently), an approach which has its genesis in a western paradigm. The Accelerative, Integrated Method (AIM), the approach on which ‘Kia Whita’ is modelled, was pioneered by Maxwell in Canada in the 1990’s for the teaching of French as a second language to English speakers
