On December 5th, 1945, five Grumman Avenger Torpedo bombers took off from the Fort Lauderdale Naval Air Station on a routine patrol. The group of planes was designated Flight 19 and they were to fly a standard patrol pattern; 160 miles due east, then 40 miles north then 120 miles southwest on the home leg. There were fourteen crew members on board the five bombers, all with plenty of flight time under their belts, all wearing Mae West life jackets, and each plane was equipped with a self inflating life raft. The planes were fully fueled and the ground crews had checked the function of every motor and instrument on board. The bombers were also equipped with ten-channel radio capability and each plane had a homing device which would point the way back to the base should they become separated or experience an equipment malfunction. The weather was perfect, the sky was blue and the seas were calm. At or near the time they were to request landing instructions the radio tower began to receive strange transmissions from the flight leader. He sounded confused and disoriented and reported strange colors in the sky and on the surface of the sea. The radio tower had sporadic contact with the bombers for another two hours and then, presumably, the planes ran out of fuel and crashed into the ocean somewhere north of the Bahamas. Once it was determined that the planes must have crashed or ditched in the sea, a rescue plane was sent into the area where the navy supposed the planes had gone down. The rescue plane was a Martin Mariner, a huge flying boat with thirteen crewmembers and enough survival gear on board to keep twice that many alive for weeks, even on the open ocean. Thirty minutes after takeoff this plane also disappeared never to be seen or heard from again. The Navy poured all its resources into finding the missing planes but none of the dozens of search ships and subsequent plane flights would ever turn up a single shred of evidence. No wrecka
