Small Group Flip Chart Notes from ICC Pre-Conference Event December 11, 2005 Following Peggy Hayden’s presentation on facilitation techniques, including open discussion with flip chart notes and merger method with flip charts and post-it notes, ICC Chairs, Staff and Members implemented these techniques in small groups to identify individual strengths, needs and concerns regarding each person’s role with the ICC. Group Strengths Needs and Concerns 1 Draw people out/making sure all are included Rephrasing, validating, reframing Ability to ask open-ended, guiding questions Make sure people feel included, valued, and their time was well spent Everyone gets to speak (in order of raising hand) Open body language/loud voice Organized/aware of time Analytic and creative Organized outcomes/stick to task Strong agenda Experience (living) Comfort level with the process Learn techniques Need to step back Lessen personal “motivation” Idealistic (keeping things in perspective) Not allow strong opinions to dominate Learn how to keep people on target/topic Meaningful opportunities for dialogue Leveling the playing field To thank people for their participation Validation of responses Knowing each member’s “motivation” Determine clear outcomes at beginning Keeping to agenda Making connection between meetings and local communities 2 Acknowledging participants Getting to core issues Good listener Good wait time Good at getting everybody to participate Setting the climate Ability to stay focused on task Ability to get discussion going Value variety of input/perspectives Ability to listen to core message Productive meeting and use of time management Frustrated Annoyed by over talkers Get impatient Try to hurry people and process Avoid “narrowing” focus too fast Sometimes to quick to interject own ideas Not as mindful of introverts as I should be Ability to respectfully keep discussion on task Everyone to respect others’ ideas Staying on task 3 Understand process Practice
