Folk Music Each country has their own folk music, but the genre usually refers to American and British music that has been passed through the generations by oral tradition. Rhythm Blues rock and roll: In its purest form, Rock Roll has three chords, a strong, insistent back beat, and a catchy melody. Rock Roll is often used as a generic term, but its sound is rarely predictable. jazz : A style of music, native to America, characterized by a strong but flexible rhythmic understructure with solo and ensemble improvisations on basic tunes and chord patterns. blues: A style of music evolved from southern Black American secular songs and usually distinguished by slow tempo and flatted thirds and sevenths. A concerto is a piece written for a soloist with orchestral background. In a concerto, the soloist does not merely perform to the accompaniment of an orchestra. He/she has many dialogue-like interactions with the orchestra, where they listen to each others parts and create the musical piece together. This concerting aspect of the piece allows people to enjoy the harmony of the ensemble and the skill of the soloist at the same time. Famous are the violin concertos by Brahms, Mendelssohn, and Tchaikovsky, often called the three grand concertos.
