The World Before the Opening of the Atlantic大西洋开幕前的世界

The World Before the Opening of the Atlantic Chapter 1 Section 1: The Earliest Americans Many scientists believe that the first people arrived in North America during the last Ice Age. Very cold temperatures caused the ocean waters to do what scientists believe allowed these people to come into North America. There are two possible beliefs: Ocean levels dropped due to ocean water being locked up in ice caps near the poles. This allowed land to appear near present day Alaska. Ocean water froze and created an “ice bridge” from Asia to Alaska. The name that is given to this passage or bridge is called Beringia. Archaeology relies on artifacts, or remains from the past made by humans to understand what happened. One thing is for sure, the early Indians first settled in Canada and slowly moved south into the United States and eventually Mexico. They did this because most Paleo-Indians were hunter gatherers, meaning they survived by hunting animals and gathering plants. This movement of these peoples from one region to another over time is called migration. Adapting to a New Climate As the Ice Age ended around 8000 B.C. water began to once again cover Beringia, trapping the new residents. The warmer weather at the end of the Ice Age created many new environments, or climates and landscapes that surround living things. Animals like buffalo and deer and berries, roots, and seeds became an important part of Paleo-Indian diet. The Development of Societies Different environments influenced the development of Native American societies, or groups that share a common culture. As we have previously learned a culture is a set of common values and traditions. Many of these farming societies began in Mesoamerica, lands in present day Mexico and South America. Domestication became an import
