Culture Difference about slavery —《Anna and The King》 组员:刘宸畅、董天涵、 侯美曼、杜玉琪 Western西方 As the most accomplished social thinker in the Christian patristic(教父的)era,Augustine of Hippe presents detailed discussions on slavery in his writings,dealing with the origin of slavery,the social status of slaves,the mastery--slave relationship and so on. Based on a close reading of his texts,this paper examines his ideas on slavery from three perspectives:his personal attitudes,his notion of social order and the influence of Christian ethics,which all sustained his main idea that slavery go against humans nature and its really a system derived from evil. Augustines perspective includes 3 inclinations,all of which interrelated with each other. First,he points out that salve is the most lamentable(可怜的) person in the world,and the slavery forces people serving others in the state of constraint(约束,强制).At the same time,he hates slave traders. Second,he considers that according to Gods original intention, there are no slaves to people and also no slaves to evil.The origin of this system is crime,so the existence of it is crime,equal. Third,realized the inevitable of the slavery in some peoples mind,he emphasizes that it is just a temporary regime in this world and it is less important compared with rescue and immortal in Christian.He believes that when this world come to an end,all of the evil will disappear.
