Wake Vortices Behavior Near the Ground

ESAIM: Proceedings, Vol. 1, 1996, pp. 279{294http://www.emath.fr/proc/Vol.1/ Wake Vortices Behavior Near the GroundAlexandre Corjon and Thierry PoinsotDepartment of Fluid MechanicsCERFACS, 42 G. Coriolis Ave, F-31057Toulouse Cedex, FranceAbstractDirect numerical simulations of a vortex pair embedded in a stable atmospheric boundarylayer are presented. The e ects of various crosswind conditions are studied. These computationsdemonstrate the creation of secondary vortices for the range of Reynolds numbers (3770 Re 7540). The physics of wake vortex interactions with the ground for di erent values of crosswindare discussed. The redistribution of vorticity between the atmospheric boundary layer andthe vorticity induced by the primary vortices may explain the vortex tilting phenomenon. Aparametrization of the e ect of crosswind on the minimum altitude reached by the two vorticesis given.1 IntroductionWith the growth of air trac and the design of new high capacity aircrafts, problems relatedto wake vortices are becoming more and more important. Throughout the world, new studies onthese problems are being initiated. The regulatory authorities are interested in developing air tracsystems aimed at safely reducing the spacing between aircraft during landing and take-o phases toincrease airport capacity. The aircraft manufacturers have a rested interest in alleviating the wakevortices to avoid categorization problems which lead to less ecient high capacity aircrafts. For thisreason, they need to have a better understanding of the wake vortices behavior near the groundfor given meteorological conditions. This knowledge has to be implemented in an engineeringmodel with real time capabilities in order to determine the hazards associated with these vortices(position and strength). CERFACS is developing such an operational model for the STNA (ServiceTechnique de la Navigation Aerienne). The development of this engineering model is based bothon experimental results collecte
