Itisshownthatinthemodelobtainedbyaddinganynumberofrandom reals to a model of CH, there is a compact Hausdor? space of weight ω1 which containsnonon-trivialconvergingsequences. Itisshownthatforcertainspaceswith noconvergingsequences,theadditionofrandomrealswillnotaddanyconverging sequences. 1. Introduction Inthispaperwewillprovethefollowingresult. Theorem 1.1. Ifweaddany(cardinal)numberofrandomrealstoamodelof ZFC+CH,weobtainamodelinwhichthereisacompactspaceofweightω with 1 nonon-trivialconvergingsequences. It is well-known that in any model of Martin’s Axiom every compact space of weightlessthanthecontinuumissequentiallycompact(see[6 ,24G]). OnemotivationforthisresultisanoldquestionduetoE?mov: Isthereanin?- nitecompactHausdor?spacewithoutconvergentsequenceswhichdoesnotinclude acopyofβN? Fedorchuk [5] gives a construction of such a space if the splitting number, s, is ω and 2ω1 2c; his method gives a space of weight c and cardinality 2ω1 1 (see [4] for generalizations to larger values of s). Any model obtained by adding uncountably many random reals will be a model of s = ω . However our result 1 providesnewsituationsinwhichthereisanE?movspace(nottomentionthatit has small weight) because in a model obtained by adding random reals one can arrangethat2ω doesequal2c. Talagrand[11]givesaconstructiondependenton 1 thecontinuumhypothesis. JustandKoszmider[9]produce suchexamplesinyet othermodels.
