UDK619:616.993.19:636.4 CRYPTOSPORIDIUMINFECTIONINNURSING,WEANINGANDPOST-WEANEDPIGLETSAND SOWSINTHEBELGRADEDISTRICT MI[ICZORANA,KATI]-RADIVOJEVI]SOFIJAandKULI[I]Z FacultyofVeterinaryMedicine,Belgrade (Received1.June2003) ThestudyoftheprevalenceofCryptosporidiuminfectioninpigs wascarriedoutinaruralareaintheBelgradedistrict.Nursing,weaning andpost-weanedpigletsandsowskeptinintensivebreedingcondi- tionswereexaminedusingtwocoprological procedures.Sheather’s sugarflotationwasemployedforconcentrationofoocysts.Amodified Ziehl-Neelsentechniquewasusedasthestainingprocedure.Crypto- sporidiumoocystsweredetectedin45.5%nursing,weaningandpost- weaned piglets aged up to 3 months, in 32.8% post-weaned piglets aged3to12monthsand15.5%sowsolderthan12months.Thehigh- estprevalenceofpositiveanimalswasdetectedamongtheweaning andpost-weanedpigletsaged30to90days(62.5%).Allofthenursing piglets, positive for Cryptosporidium infection, had diarrhea. In post- weanedpiglets(aged3to12months)andadultpigsCryptosporidium infectionwasasymptomatic.Adultasymptomaticcarriersmayplayan importantroleasasourceofinfection.Thesefindingsindicatethepo- tentialroleofsuchpigsasreservoirsofcryptosporidiaforyoungpig- lets,otherlivestockandhumans. Keywords:Cryptosporidium,piglets,sows,diarrhea INTRODUCTION Cryptosporidiumparvumcausescryptosporidiosisinawiderangeofverte- brates,includingpigs.Cryptosporidiawerefirstobservedinseveralweek-oldpig- letsbyKennedyetal.(1977).Thisparasiteinfectsepithelialsurfaces,especially thosealongthegut,butalsocanbefoundextra-intestinally(Fletaetal.,1995).An indicationofthepathogenicityofCryptosporidiuminswinewasobtainedbyBer- geland(1977)whenCryptosporidiumwasdetectedinasuckingpigletwithnecro- tisingenteritis.FurtherevidenceofpathogenicitywaspublishedbyLinks(1982) whentheorganismwasdetectedinthesmallintestinesofpigletssufferingfrom diarrhea.Nootherintestinalpathogenswerefound.Experimentalinfectionindi- catesaprimaryaetiologicrole
