Edelweiss(LeontopodiumalpinumCass.)istraditionallyemployedinfolkmedicineasananti-in?ammatoryremedy.Innature,the plantissparselyavailableandprotected;thereforeproductionofcalluscultureswasestablished.Aconcentratedethanolicextractof culturehomogenate,withleontopodicacidrepresenting55±2%ofthetotalphenolicfraction(ECC55),wascharacterizedforanti- in?ammatorypropertiesinprimaryhumankeratinocytes(PHKs)andendotheliocytes(HUVECs).In?ammatoryresponseswere inducedbyUVA+UVB,lipopolysaccharide(LPS),oxidizedlow-densitylipoprotein(oxLDL),andamixtureofproin?ammatory cytokines.TrichostatinA,asirtuininhibitor,wasusedtoinducekeratinocytein?ammatorysenescence.ECC55(10–50μg/mL) protectedPHKfromsolarUV-drivendamage,byenhancingearlyintracellularlevelsofnitricoxide,althoughnota?ectingUV- inducedexpressionofin?ammatorygenes.Comparisonofthedose-dependentinhibitionofchemokine(IL-8,IP-1
