Sleepdisorderedbreathingaswellashighserumuricacidlevelsareindependentriskfactorsforcardiovasculardisease.However, studiesevaluatingtherelationshipbetweensleep-disorderedbreathingandhyperuricemiaarelimited.Weexaminedthe2005–2008 NationalHealthandNutritionExaminationsurvey’ssleepvariablesandhighserumuricacidamong6491participantsaged≥20 years.Thesleepvariablesincludedsleepduration,snoring,snorting,anddaytimesleepiness.Themainoutcomewashighserum uricacidlevel,de?nedaslevelsofserumuricacid6.8mg/dLinmalesand6.0mg/dLinfemales.Wefoundthatsnoringmore than5nightsperweek,daytimesleepiness,andanadditivecompositescoreofsleepvariableswereassociatedwithhighserumuric acidintheage-,sex-adjustedmodelandinamultivariablemodeladjustingfordemographicandlifestyle/behavioralriskfactors. Theassociationwasattenuatedwiththeadditionofvariablesrelatedtoclinicaloutcomessuchasdepression,diabetes,hyper- tension,andhigh-cholesterollevels.Ourresultsindicateapositiverelationshipbetweensleepvariables,includingthepresenceof snoring,snorting,anddaytimesleepiness,andhighserumuricacidlevels. 1.Intro
