Background.Fewstudieshavebeendonethatcharacterizebasalcellcarcinoma(BCC)inAsiansbecausethistumorisrelatively uncommoninthispopulationgroup.Objective.TocharacterizeBCCinAsians.Methods.Weretrospectivelyexamined?fteen patientvariablesandeighttumorvariablesoftenAsianpatientswithBCCandcomparedtheseresultstothoseofthirtymatched CaucasiancontrolswithBCC.Results.Asiansdevelopedtheir?rstBCCatanolderagethantheageof?rstBCCinCaucasian controls(68.9yearsversus58.3years;P 0.05).Duringtheirlifetime,AsianshadfewerBCCsthanthenumberofBCCsin Caucasiancontrols(1.11versus5.41;P 0.02),despiteasimilarestimatedlifetimedailysunexposure(hours/day)forboth groups.ComparedtoBCCsinCaucasiancontrols,ahigherpercentageofBCCsinAsianswereclinicallypigmented(50.0%versus 3.3%;P0.01).Conclusion.AsiansdevelopBCCslaterinlifeanddevelopfewerBCCsovertheirlifetimethanCaucasians,despite similarestimatedlifetimedailysunexposure.This?ndingisprobablyduetoskinpigmentationinAsiansbeingmoreprotective ofultravioletlightthanskinpigmentationinCaucasians. 1.Background authors (RGB) from January 1992 to January 2001 were identi?ed.
