Objectives were to evaluate e?ects of (1) repetitive arthrocentesis on biomarkers of in?ammation (prostaglandin E2, PGE2) and aggrecan synthesis (chondroitin sulfate-846; CS) in synovial ?uid (SF); (2) exercise and superoxide dismutase (SOD) supplementation on biomarkers of in?ammation, antioxidant status, and aggrecan synthesis, in horses. Preliminary trial. Standardbredsunderwentfourarthrocentesisprocedureswithin48handexhibitedelevatedCSandnochangesinPGE2.Exercise trial.thisrandomizedcrossoverdesignusedtwelveStandardbredmareswhichreceivedeithertreatment(3000IUd?1oralSOD powder)orplacebo(cellulosepowder)for6wkswhichculminatedwiththemrunningarepeatedsprintexercisetest(RSET). Sampleswerecollectedbefore(PRE),during(PEAK),andfollowingexercise(POST).Exerciseresultedinincreased(P 0.05) antioxidantdefensesincludingerythrocyteSOD,totalglutathione,glutathioneperoxidase,genetranscriptsforinterferon-gamma, interleukin-10,andinterleukin-1βinblood,anddecreasedplasmanitricoxide.Exerciseincreased(P0.05)SFCSandadjusted- PGE2,andhigher(P 0.05)CSandPGE2werefoundinhockversuscarpusjoints.Notreatmente?ectsweredetected.Results suggestnormaladaptiveresponseslikelyduetoexercise-inducedtissuemicrodamageand
