Amla(PhyllanthusemblicaL.),apartfromitsfoodvalue,canbeusedasagastroprotectiveagentinnonsteroidalanti-in?ammatory drug(NSAID)-inducedgastropathy.Ithasbeensuggestedthattheantioxidativepropertyofamlaisthekeytoitstherapeutic e?ect.Hence,onthebasisofinvitroantioxidativepotential,theethanolicextractofamla(eAE)wasselectedforinvivostudy inNSAID-inducedulcer.Intriguingly,eAEshowedbiphasicactivityinulceratedmice,withhealinge?ectobservedat60mg/kg and an adverse e?ect at 120mg/kg.The dose-dependent study revealed that switching from anti-oxidant to pro-oxidant shift andimmunomodulatorypropertycouldbethemajorcauseforitsbiphasice?ect,asevidentfromthetotalantioxidantstatus, thiolconcentration,lipidperoxidation,proteincarbonylcontentfollowedbymucincontent,PGE2synthesisandcytokinestatus. Further,Buthioninesulfoxamine(BSO)pretreatmentestablishedthepotentialimpactofantioxidativepropertyinthehealing actionofeAE.However,eAEe?cientlyreducedpro-in?ammatorycytokine(TNF-αandIL-1β)levelsandappreciablyupregulate anti-in?ammatorycytokine(IL-10)concentration.Inconclusion,gastric ulcerhealinginducedbyeAEwasdriveninad
