Weculturedhumanmesenchymalstemcells(hMSCs)onTiO2nanotubeswithdiametersof30–100nmtoassessthesize-e?ectof TiO2nanotubesonthebehaviorandosteogenicfunctionalityofhMSCs.Moststudiesoftheexpressionofgenesencodingalkaline phosphatase(ALP),osteocalcin(OCN),osteopontin(OPN),andintegrin-β(INT-B),after1weekofincubation,supportedthe resultsofcellviabilityandMTTassaysat48hrsofplating.However,after2weeksofincubation,expressionofALP,OPN,INT-B, andproteinkinaseR-likeERkinase(PERK)genesweresigni?cantlyhigherincellsculturedon70nmTiO2nanotubesthanthat incellsculturedonotherTiO2nanotubesandTi.ThisbiphasicosteogeniccharacteristicofhMSCsissupposedtorelatingtothe natureofthehMSCsadheringtothesubstrateatthebeginningofincubation,andthenanostructuralstimulationcausedbythe topographyofTiO2nanotubesatalaterstageofincubation.ThediscoveryofthesebiphasiccharacteristicsofhMSCsculturedon di?erent-sizedTiO2nanotubesmaycontributetoresolvingthediscrepantresultsrelatingtothesize-e?ectofTiO2nanotubeson theadhesion,proliferation,andfunctionalityofcells. 1.Introduction behaviorandfunctionalityofvascularsmoothmusclecells, comparedtothee?ectofpureTi,regardlessofthesizeof the nanotubes [23].
