Ammonium-nitrate-(AN-)basedcompositepropellantspreparedwithahydroxyl-terminatedpolybutadiene(HTPB)/polytetra- hydrofuran(PTHF)blendbinderhaveuniquethermaldecompositioncharacteristics.Inthisstudy,theburningcharacteristicsof AN/HTPB/PTHFpropellantsareinvestigated.Thespeci?cimpulseandadiabatic?ametemperatureofanAN-basedpropellant theoreticallyincreaseswithanincreaseintheproportionofPTHFintheHTPB/PTHFblend.WithanAN/HTPBpropellant,a solidresidueisleftontheburningsurfaceofthepropellant,andtheshapeofthisresidueissimilartothatofthepropellant. Ontheotherhand,anAN/HTPB/PTHFpropellantdoesnotleaveasolidresidue.TheburningratesoftheAN/HTPB/PTHF propellantarenotmarkedlydi?erentfromthoseoftheAN/HTPBpropellantbecausesomeofthelique?edHTPB/PTHFbinder covertheburningsurfaceandimpededecompositionandcombustion.TheburningratesofanAN/HTPB/PTHFpropellantwith aburningcatalystarehigherthanthoseofanAN/HTPBpropellantsupplementedwithacatalyst.Thebene?ciale?ectoftheblend binderontheburningcharacteristicsisclari?edupontheadditionofacatalyst.Thecatalystsuppressesthenegativein?uenceof thelique?edbinderthatcoverstheburningsurface.Thus,HTPB/PTHFblendbindersareusefulinimprovingtheperformanceof AN-basedpropellants. 1.Introduction (A
