Background.Roleofherbsinthemanagementandcontrolofdiabeteshasemergedfastovertheyears.Weassessedthee?cacy ofCocciniagrandis(locallyknownasKen,Kovakka)leavesasahypoglycemicagent.Methods.Double-blindphaseIclinicaltrial wasconductedatthegeneralhospitalandaprivatehospitalinMatarainAugust2009.Alltheparticipantsweregivenacommon mealfordinner,andtheymaintaineda10-hourfastingperiod.Sixty-onehealthyvolunteersweregivenamealcontaining20g ofleavesofCocciniagrandiswhichwasmixedwithameasuredamountofscrapedcoconutandtablesaltforbreakfast,andother 61weregiventheplacebomealwhichalsocontainedscrapedcoconutandsalt.Glucosetolerancetestwasperformedblindlyfor thetwogroups.Mixedfactorialdesignanalysisofvarianceandstudent’st-testwereapplied.Results.Overallbloodsugarlevels oftheexperimentalgroupwerealsosigni?cantlylowerthanthoseofthecontrolgroup(F(1,117)5.56,P0.05).Increaseinthe bloodsugarlevelsfromfastingtoonehour(F(1,117)6.77,P0.05)andtwohours(F(1,117)5.28,P0.05)postprandiallywas statisticallysigni?cantforparticipantswhowereinthecontrolgroupthanthoseofintheexperimentalg
