Argumentshavebeendevelopedshowingthatthediabetes- induceddecreaseinNa+,K+-ATPaseactivitycompromises microvascularblood?owbytwomechanisms:byaffecting microvascularregulationandbydecreasingredbloodcell deformability,whichleadstoanincreaseinbloodviscos- ity.C-peptideinfusionrestoresredbloodcelldeformability andmicrovascularblood?owconcomitantlywithNa+,K+- ATPaseactivity.ThedefectinATPaseisstronglyrelatedto diabeticneuropathy.Patientswithneuropathyhavelower ATPaseactivitythanthosewithout.Thediabetes-induced impairmentinNa+,K+-ATPaseactivityisidenticalinred bloodcellsandneuraltissue.RedbloodcellATPaseactiv- ityisrelatedtonerveconductionvelocityintheperoneal andthetibialnerveofdiabeticpatients.C-peptideinfusion todiabeticratsincreasesendoneuralATPaseactivityinrat. BecausethedefectinNa+,K+-ATPaseactivityisalsoproba- Na+,K+-ATPase is an ubiquitous membrane enzyme thatallowstheextrusionofthreesodiumionsfromthecell andtwopotassiumionsfromtheextracellular?uid.Itsac- tivityisdecreasedinmanytissuesofstreptozotocin-induced diabeticanimals.Thisimpairmentcouldbeatleastpartly responsibleforthedevelopmentofdiabeticcomplications. Na+,K+-ATPaseactivityisdecreasedintheredbloodcell membranesoftype1diabeticindividuals,irrespectiveofthe degreeofdiabeticcontrol.Itislessimpairedorevennor- malinthoseoftype2diabeticpatients.Theauthorshave shownthatintheredbloodcellsoftype2diabeticpatients, Na+,K+-ATPaseactivitywasstronglyrelatedtobloodC- peptidelevelsinnon–insulin-treatedpatients(inwhomC- p
