JennieC.I.Tsao ACommentaryforeCAMonCAMandthePhenomenologyofPain,byAlexHankey Previously,wereviewedtheevidencefortheefficacyofCAMapproachesforpediatricpain(volume2; issue2;2005)usingcriteriadevelopedbytheAmericanPsychologicalAssociationDivision12Task Force.OurreviewfocusedonCAMmodalitiesthathadbeentestedwithatleastonecontrolledtrial ormultiplebaselinestudy.Inaddition,onlythosetrialsinwhichchildrencomprisedthestudysample wereincluded.Thus,severalCAMmodalitieswerenotincludedinourreview.Keyethicalandother reasonsforthelimitedliteratureonCAMforpediatricpainaswellasdirectionsforfuturestudiesare discussed. The commentary by Alex Hankey on our article, ‘Comple- mentary and Alternative Medicine Approaches for Pediatric Pain’ (1),raisedsomevaluablepointsregardingthepractice ofCAMinterventionsforchronicandacutepain.Whereasit iscertainlytruethatCAMconsistsofmanymoremodalities than those reviewed in our article, the intent of the review was to focus on those modalities that had at least one con- trolled trial or at least one multiple baseline study in the peer-reviewedliterature(seepage150).Thus,ourreviewdid notincludeseveralofthemodalitiesdiscussedinDrHankey’s Commentary,includinghands-onordistancehealing,medita- tion,TraditionalChineseMedicine,andAyurveda.Ourreview wasnotintendedtoeitherimplicitlyorexplicitlyexcludethese modalities without relevant published literature from the list ofpotentiallysafeandefficaciousCAMtreatmentsforpain.
