Alzheimer’s disease is a devastating neurodegenerative condition currently a?ecting over 5 million elderly individuals in the UnitedStates.ThereismuchevidencesuggestingthatcertaindietarylifestylescanhelptopreventandpossiblytreatAlzheimer’s disease.Inthispaper,wediscusshowcertaincardiovascularanddiabeticconditionscaninduceanincreasedsusceptibilityfor Alzheimer’sdiseaseandthemechanismsthroughwhichthisoccurs.Wefurtherdiscusshowtheconsumptionofcertainfoodsor foodcomponentscanhelptoreduceone’sriskforAlzheimer’sdiseaseandmaypossiblybedevelopedasatherapeuticagent. 1.Introduction glucose/sugarintake,inadditiontotheinclusionoffoodslike ?sh,certainfruitsandvegetables,plantextracts,spicesand redwine,orpolyphenol-richfoodsinone’sdiet. Alzheimer’sdisease(AD)isaprogressiveneurodegenerative disordercharacterizedbyaprogressivedeclineinmemory functions,whichhasbecomeagrowingpublichealthcon- cern.Thisconditionofclinicaldementiawas?rstdescribed byAloisAlzheimerin1907,andeversince,theincidenceof ADhasincreasedexponentially.Therearepresently5million Americansa?ectedwithAD,andtheestimatedannualhealth care cost is almost 100 billion dollar
