We examine the two types of singular behaviors of ultrashort pulses in a nonlinear medium, pulse steepening if the weak longitudinaldispersionisnormalandcollapseifitisanomalous.Connectionswithanalogousbehaviorsofwavepacketsofalmost monochromaticwavesinstronglydispersivemediaarediscussed. 1.Introduction [5], and the results of Kolesik and Moloney [6]. Indeed, inmanycasestheauthorsappearedtobeunawareofeach other’sresults.Ourgoalshereareasfollows.
