Methods: WeretainedisolatesofC.albicansfromwomenfollowedlongitudinallythroughpregnancy,andidenti- fiedsixpairsofculturesfromwomenwhowerecolonizedwithoutsymptomsandwholaterbecamesymptomatic (averagetime14weeks).Weusedarandomamplification ofpolymorphicDNA(RAPD)analysistodetermine whetherisolatesfromourstudypatientsweregeneticallysimilarordissimilar. Results: Analysis of these pairs of yeast strains by RAPD revealed that five of the six women had symptoms apparentlyduetothesameyeaststrainthatwasfoundinitiallyasacommensalstrain.Toincreasethepowerof theseobservations,wealsoperformedRAPDanalysisonsixrandomlyselectedyeaststrainsfromotherwomenin thisstudywhohadnotbecomesymptomatictodeterminewhetheranyoftheseunrelatedstrainsmatchedstrains fromthosewomenwhobecamesymptomatic. Conclusion: SymptomaticyeastvaginitisisusuallyduetostrainsofC.albicansalreadycarriedinthelowergenital tract,underscoringtheneedtounderstandregulationofgrowthandvirulenceoftheorganisminvivo.
