Modalenergyredistributionisutilizedtosuppressvibrationsofacantileverbeam.Theenergyredistributionbetweenthemodes ofthebeamisachievedbyswitchingon/o?anendforcewhichcausesvaryingsti?nessofthebeam.Thecontrolmethodologyto suppressallthemodesreliesoncontinuouslyfunnelingtheenergyfromthehighertothelowermodeswiththeendforceand dissipatingtheenergyassociatedwiththefundamentalmode.Wepresentananalyticalframeworkforcontroldesignexploiting themodalenergyredistributionandverifytheresultsthroughsimulationsandexperiments. 1.Introduction an end force to redistribute the energy of the beam such that higher modes’ energy funnel to the lower modes or getsuppressed.Theenergyassociatedwiththe?rstmodeis dissipatedbyemployingafeedbackclosed-loopsystem.We showthatinthisschemethatenergyofthebeamdecreases iftheswitchingoftheendforce(i.e.,turningon/o?theend force)doesnotaddsigni?cantenergytothebeamorremoves itsenergy. Thispaperisorganizedasfollows.InSection2,weshow aproofoftheconceptofwhymodalenergygetsredistributed using an end force and how the energy of the beam is reduced.InSection3,weconsideracantileverbeamwithan endforceandderiveitsmathematicalmodel.Additionally, welookatthemodalenergyofthebeamandintroducea switchingstrategywhichminimallya?ectstheenergyofthe beam.Sections4and5providesimulationandexperimental results,respectively.Concludingremarksandfuturer
