Patientswithcystic?brosis(CF)area?ictedwithmanysymptomsbutthegreatestchallengeisthe?ghtagainstchronicbacterial infections,leadingtodecreasedlungfunctionandultimatelydeath.Ourgrouphasrecentlyfoundreducedlevelsofceramides inCFpatientsandmice.Ceramidesaresphingolipidsinvolvedinthestructureofcellmembranesbutalsoparticipateinthe in?ammatoryresponse,incellsignallingthroughmembranemicrodomains(lipidrafts),andinapoptosis.Thesecharacteristics ofceramidesmakethemstrongcandidatesfortherapeuticinterventioninCF.Asmorestudieshavecometoevaluatetheroleof ceramideinCF,con?ictingresultshavebeendescribed.Thispaperdiscussesvariousviewsregardingthepotentialroleofceramide inCF,summarizesmethodsofceramidedetectionandtheirroleintheregulationofcellularandmolecularprocesses. 1.Introduction saline for increases in airway surface liquid, and nons- teroidal antiin?ammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like Ibuprofen to decrease the in?ammatory response.
