We define an alternative recovery index for trees – the Tannerindex,asthemeanofthequantitativeBray-Curtissimilarityindicesofspeciescompositionforstemdensityandfor basalarea.Weusedthenewindextocomparetheoriginal(pre-gap)andpost-gapcompositionoffiveexperimentalgap plots(each90–100m2)andfourcontrolplotsover24–35yearsintheBlueMountainsofJamaica.After24–35years,these smallgapssurroundedbyundisturbedforesthadrecovered68%ofthesumofperspeciesstemdensityand29%ofthe sumofperspeciesbasalarea,arecoveryindexof47%.Fourendemicspecieswereespeciallyreducedindensityandbasal area.Withtheincorporationofbasalareaandstemdensity,ourindexreducesover-estimationsofforestrecoveryobtained usingexistingsimilarityindices(by24%–41%),andthusyieldsmoreaccurateestimatesofforestconservationstatus.Finally, ourstudyindicatesthatthetwokindsofcomparisons:1)overtimebetweenpre-gapandpost-gapcompositionand2)over spacebetweengapplotsandspatialcontrols(space-for-timesubstitution)yieldbroadlysimilarresults,whichsupportsthe valueofusingspace-for-timesubstitutionsinstudyingforestrecovery,atleastinthi
