To address this question, the current study examined the reduction in alcohol consumption, assessedbybreathalcoholanddrinkdiaryself-report,of405alcohol-dependentclientsovera10-day,un-medicated,self- paced alcohol reduction program that included group discussion of strategies for titrating between withdrawal and intoxication.Itwasfoundthatattendanceattreatmentsessionswasassociatedwithareductioninalcoholconsumption, reflectedinbothbreathalcoholanddiarymeasures,andthesetwomeasuresweresignificantlycorrelated.Overall,35%of clientsachievedazerobreathalcoholreadingbytheirfinalsession,althoughthispercentageincreasedto56%ofclients whoattendedall10sessions.Withdrawalseizuresoccurredinonly0.5%ofclientsdespite17.2%havingahistoryofseizures inothersettings.Itisconcludedthatthealcoholreductionprotocoloutlinedhereprovidesaneffectiveandsafemethodfor reducingalcoholconsumptioninseverelyalcoholdependentclients,andthatmethodsforaugmentingattendance,suchas contingencymanagement,shouldenhancetheeffectivenessofthistreatment.
