Sourcesofvariabilityareprobablymulti-factorial,includingthecontributionofgenderrelatedeffects.Gender relatedvariationinperceivedpainhasbeendiscussedfrequently,butdocumentedeffectsofacupuncturereferring togenderaresparse.Furthermore,factorssuchasoperationalisationoftheoutcomevariableandthestatistical methodforevaluationcouldalsobesourcesofvariability.Whenpainisregardedassubjective,theproduceddata shouldbetreatedasordinal.Therank-basedmethodbySvensson,takingthenon-metricqualitiesoftheordinal dataintoaccountaswellasthevariabilityatthegroupandtheindividuallevel,isthereforeanalternative.The presentcommentaryaimsto(1)evaluatechangesinelectricalsensorythresholdsandelectricalpainthresholds afterlowfrequencyelectro-acupunctureseparatelyinhealthywomenandmen;(2)introduceandexemplifythe methodbySvenssoninauser-friendlyapproach.Toanalyzethesystematicpatternsofchangeinthresholds,indi- catingevidenceoftreatmentonagrouplevel,therelativeposition(RP)andrelativeconcentration(RC),weremea- sured.Thevariationrelatedtotheindividual,therelativerankvariation(RV)wasalsomeasured.Theresultswere divergentbetweenwomen(n=23)andmen(n=22),i.e.unchangedsensorythresholdafteracupunctureatthe grouplevelinwomenwhilechangedinmen.Theassessedpainthresholdafteracupunctureontheotherhand waschangedtowardshigherlevelsinwomenandunchangedinmen.Theindividualvariationwasapparentin bothwomenandmenbutlargerinwomen.Forstatisticalanalysisofthevariabilityforbothgroupandindividual relatedeffects,therank-basedmethodbySvenssoncouldbeused.Thepresentstudyindicatesthatevaluationof sensoryandpainthresholdresponseshouldbeanalysedseparatelyinwomenandmen.
