Methods:IPTcwasdeliveredbyvolunteersinsixvillages(community-basedarm)andbyhealthworkersathealthcentresor at ExpandedProgramme on Immunisationoutreach clinics(facility based) in anothersix communities. The villages were selectedrandomlyanddrugswereadministeredinMay,June,SeptemberandOctober2006.Thefirstdoseofathree-dose regimen of amodiaquine plus sulphadoxine-pyrimethamine was administered under supervision to 3–59 month-old children(n=964)inthe12studyvillages;dosesfordays2and3weregiventoparents/guardianstoadministerathome. Results:Theproportionofchildrenwhoreceivedatleastthefirstdoseof3ormorecoursesofIPTcwasslightlyhigherin thecommunitybasedarm(90.5%vs86.6%;p=0.059).Completionofthethreedoseregimenwashighandsimilarwith bothdeliverysystems(91.6%and91.7%respectively). Conclusion:SeasonalIPTcdeliveredthroughcommunity-basedorfacility-basedsystemscanachieveahighcoveragerate withthesupportandsupervisionofthedistricthealthmanagementteam.However,inordertomaximisetheimpactof IPTc,bothdeliverysystemsmaybeneededinsomesettings.
