ParallelComputationalSubunitsinDentateGranuleCells GenerateMultiplePlaceFields Bala′zsUjfalussy1*,Tama′sKiss1,Pe′terErdi′ 1,2 1DepartmentofBiophysics,KFKIResearchInstituteforParticleandNuclearPhysicsoftheHungarianAcademyofSciences,Budapest,Hungary,2CenterforComplex SystemsStudies,KalamazooCollege,Kalamazoo,Michigan,UnitedStatesofAmerica Abstract A fundamental question in understanding neuronal computations is how dendritic events influence the output of the neuron.Differentformsofintegrationofneighbouringanddistributedsynapticinputs,isolateddendriticspikesandlocal regulation of synaptic efficacy suggest that individual dendritic branches may function as independent computational subunits.Inthepresentpaper,westudyhowtheselocalcomputationsinfluencetheoutputoftheneuron.Usingasimple cascade model, we demonstrate that triggering somatic firing by a relatively small dendritic branch requires the amplificationoflocaleventsbydendriticspikingandsynapticplasticity.Themoderatelybranchingdendritictreeofgranule cells seems optimal for this computation since larger dendritic trees favor local plasticity by isolating dendritic compartments,whilereliabledetectionofindividualdendriticspikesinthesomarequiresalowbranchnumber.Finally,we demonstratethattheseparalleldendriticcomputationscouldcontributetothegenerationofmultipleindependentplace fieldsofhippocampalgranulecells.
