Methodology/PrincipalFindings:Herewepresentresultsfromhybridcrosses,fromtriploidmusselsandfromobservations of sperm mitochondria in fertilized eggs which clearly show that maleness and presence of the paternal mitochondrial genomecanbedecoupled.Thesesameresultsshowthatthefemalemusselhasexclusivecontrolofwhetherherprogeny willinheritthemitochondrialgenomeofthemaleparent. Conclusions/Significance:Thesefindingsareimportantinoureffortstounderstandthemechanisticbasisofthisunusual modeofmitochondrialDNAinheritancethatiscommonamongbivalves.
