A high prevalence of Campylobacter concisus was previously detected in paediatric CD and adult UC. Currently, the prevalenceofC.concisusinadultCDandthepreferentialcolonizationsitesofCampylobacterspeciesinthehumanintestine are unknown. In this study, we examined the prevalence of Campylobacter species in biopsies collected from multiple anatomicsitesofadultpatientswithIBDandcontrols. Methods:Threehundredandonebiopsiescollectedfromileum,caecum,descendingcolonandrectumof28patientsIBD (15CDand13UC)and33controlswerestudied.BiopsieswereusedforDNAextractionanddetectionofCampylobacter speciesbyPCR-sequencingandCampylobactercultivation. Results: A significantly higher prevalence of C. concisus in colonic biopsies of patients with CD (53%) was detected as comparedwiththecontrols(18%).Campylobactergenus-PCRpositivityandC.concisuspositivityinpatientswithUCwere 85%and77%respectively,beingsignificantlyhigherthanthatinthecontrols(48%and36%).C.concisuswasmoreoften detectedindescendingcolonicandrectalbiopsiesfrompatientswithIBDincomparisontothecontrols.C.concisuswas isolatedfrompatientswithIBD. Conclusion:ThehighintestinalprevalenceofC.concisusinpatientswithIBD,particularlyintheproximallargeintestine, suggeststhatfuturestudiesareneededtoinvestigatethepossibleinvolvementofC.concisusinasubgroupofhumanIBD.
