We show here through rigorous theoretical analysis that inherent stochastic features of spiking neurons,incombinationwithsimplenonlinearcomputationaloperationsinspecificnetworkmotifsanddendriticarbors, enablenetworksofspikingneuronstocarryoutprobabilisticinferencethroughsamplingingeneralgraphicalmodels.In particular, itenables themtocarry outprobabilistic inference in Bayesiannetworks withconverging arrows (‘‘explaining away’’)andwithundirectedloops,thatoccurinmanyreal-worldtasks.Ubiquitousstochasticfeaturesofnetworksofspiking neurons,suchastrial-to-trialvariabilityandspontaneousactivity,arenecessaryingredientsoftheunderlyingcomputational organization.Wedemonstratethroughcomputersimulationsthatthisapproachcanbescaleduptoneuralemulationsof probabilisticinferenceinfairlylargegraphicalmodels,yieldingsomeofthemostcomplexcomputationsthathavebeen carriedoutsofarinnetworksofspikingneurons.
