Few studies exist on the direct effect of psychologicalstresstoafemaleondevelopmentalcompetenceofheroocytes,andthedirecteffectofpredatorymaternal stressonoocyteshasnotbeenreported.Inthisstudy,apredatorystresssystemwasfirstestablishedformicewithcatsas predators.Beginning24hafterinjectionofequinechorionicgonadotropin,femalemiceweresubjectedtopredatorystress for24h.Evaluationofmouseresponsesshowedthatthepredatorystresssystemthatweestablishedincreasedanxiety-like behaviorsandplasmacortisolconcentrationssignificantlyandcontinuouslywhilenotaffectingfoodandwaterintakeofthe mice.InvitroexperimentsshowedthatwhereasoocytematurationandSr2+activationorfertilizationwereunaffectedby maternalpredatorystress,rateofblastocystformationandnumberofcellsperblastocystdecreasedsignificantlyinstressed mice compared to non-stressed controls. In vivo embryo development indicated that both the number of blastocysts recoveredperdonormouseandtheaveragenumberofyoungperrecipientafterembryotransferofblastocystswithsimilar cell counts were significantly lower in stressed than in unstressed donor mice. It is concluded that the predatory stress system weestablished was both effective anddurative toinduce mousestressresponses. Furthermore, predatorystress appliedduringtheoocytepre-maturationstagesignificantlyimpairedoocytedevelopmentalpotentialwhileexertingno measurableimpactonnuclearmaturation,suggestingthatcytoplasmicmaturationofmouseoocyteswasmorevulnerable tomaternalstressthannuclearmaturation.
