Atthesame time,wecruciallydependonthoseautomatedannotations,asmostnewlysequencedgenomesarenon-modelorganisms. Here, we introduce a methodology to systematically and quantitatively evaluate electronic annotations. By exploiting changesinsuccessivereleasesoftheUniProtGeneOntologyAnnotationdatabase,weassessedthequalityofelectronic annotations in terms of specificity, reliability, andcoverage. Overall, wenot only foundthat electronic annotations have significantlyimprovedinrecentyears,butalsothattheirreliabilitynowrivalsthatofannotationsinferredbycuratorswhen theyuseevidenceotherthanexperimentsfromprimaryliterature.Thisworkprovidesthemeanstoidentifythesubsetof electronic annotations that can be relied upon—an important outcome given that .98% of all annotations areinferred withoutdirectcuration.
