Seretetal.EJNMMIResearch2012,2:45 /content/2/1/45 ORIGINAL RESEARCH OpenAccess Quantitativecapabilitiesoffourstate-of-the-art SPECT-CTcameras AlainSeret1,2*,DanielNguyen1andClaireBernard3 Abstract Background:Fourstate-of-the-artsingle-photonemissioncomputedtomography-computedtomography (SPECT-CT)systems,namelyPhilipsBrightview,GeneralElectricDiscoveryNM/CT670andInfiniaHawkeye4,and SiemensSymbiaT6,wereinvestigatedintermsofaccuracyofattenuationandscattercorrection,contrastrecovery forsmallhotandcoldstructures,andquantitativecapabilitieswhenusingtheirdedicatedthree-dimensional iterativereconstructionwithattenuationandscattercorrectionsandresolutionrecovery. Methods:TheNationalElectricalManufacturersAssociation(NEMA)NU-21994phantomwithcoldair,water,and Tefloninserts,andahomemadecontrastphantomwithhotandcoldrodswerefilledwith 99mTcandscanned.The acquisitionparameterswerechosentoprovideadequatelinearandangularsamplingandhighcountstatistics.The datawerereconstructedusingPhilipsAstonish,GeneralElectricEvolutionforBone,orSiemensFlash3D,eight subsets,andavaryingnumberofiterations.Aproceduresimilartotheoneusedinpositronemissiontomography (PET)allowedustoobtainthefactortoconvertcountsperpixelintoactivityperunitvolume. Results:Edgeandoscillationartifactswereobservedwithallphantomsandallsystems.At30iterations,the residualfractionintheinsertsoftheNEMAphantomfellbelow3.5%.Contrastrecoveryincreasedwiththenumber ofiterationsbutbecamealmostsaturatedat24iterationsonwards.IntheuniformpartoftheNEMAandcontrast phantoms,aquantificationerrorbelow10%wasachieved. Conclusions:InobjectswhosedimensionsexceededtheSPECTspatialresolutionbyseveraltimes,quantification seemedtobefeasiblewithin10%errorlimits.Apartialvolumeeffectcorrectionstrategyremainsnecessaryforthe smalleststructures.Thereconstructionartifactsneverthelessremainahandicapontheroadtowardsaccurate quantificationinSPECTandshouldbethefocusoffurtherworksinreconstructiontomography.
