Methods:Across-sectionalstudyofremissionrate,usinga6-monthfollow-uptoassesssymptomaticstability,was conductedintwohealthcaredistricts(firstandsecond)ofanoutpatientpsychiatricserviceinMoscow.Thekey inclusioncriteriawereoutpatientswithanInternationalClassificationofDiseases,10thedition(ICD-10)diagnosisof schizophreniaorschizoaffectivedisorder.Remissionwasassessedusingmoderncriteria(severityandtimecriteria), PANSSandGlobalAssessmentofFunctioning(GAF).Patientswhowerestablebutdidnotsatisfiedthesymptomatic criteriawereincludedinafurther1-yearobservationalstudy,withthefirstgroup(firstdistrict)receivingrisperidone (long-acting,injectable)(RLAI)andthesecondgroup(seconddistrict)continuingtoreceivingroutinetreatment. SymptomswereassessedwithPANSS,socialfunctioningwiththepersonalandsocialperformancescale,compliance withratingofmedicationinfluencesscale,andextrapyramidalsideeffectswiththeSimpson-Angusscale. Results:Only64(31.5%)of203outpatientsmetthecriteriaforsymptomaticremissioninthecross-sectionalstudy, butattheendofthe6-monthfollow-upperiod,158(77.8%)werestable(irrespectiveofremissionstatus).Among theseonly53(26.1%)patientsfulfilledtheremissioncriteria.Theobservationalstudyhad42stablepatientsinthe RLAIgroupand35intheroutinetreatmentgroup:19.0%intheRLAIgroupand5.7%inthecontrolgroupmet remissioncriteriaafter12monthsoftherapy.Furthermore,reductionofPANSStotalandsubscalescores,aswellas improvementinsocialfunctioning,wasmoresignificantinthefirstgroup.
