Abstract Background:Mentalhealthandpsychosocialwellbeingarekeyconcernsindisplacedpopulations.Despiteurban refugeesconstitutingmorethanhalfoftheworld’srefugees,minimalattentionhasbeenpaidtotheirpsychosocial wellbeing.Thepurposeofthisstudywastoassesscopingbehaviourandaspectsofresilienceamongstrefugeesin Kathmandu,Nepal. Methods:Thisstudyexaminedtheexperiencesof16Pakistaniand8SomaliurbanrefugeesinKathmandu,Nepal throughin-depthindividualinterviews,focusgroups,andPhotovoicemethodology.Suchqualitativeapproaches enabledustobroadlydiscussthemessuchaspersonalexperiencesofbeingarefugeeinKathmandu,perceived causesofpsychosocialdistress,andstrategiesandresourcesforcoping.Thematicnetworkanalysiswasusedinthis studytosystematicallyinterpretandcodethedata. Results:Ourfindingshighlightthaturbanrefugees’activecopingefforts,notwithstandingsignificantadversityand resultingdistress,aremostfrequentlythroughprimaryrelationships.InformedbyAxelHonneth’stheoryonthe struggleforrecognition,findingssuggestthatcopingisafunctionbeyondtheindividualandinvolvestheabilityto negotiaterecognition.Thisnegotiationinvolvesnotonlyprimaryrelationships,butalsothelegalorderandother socialnetworkssuchasfamilyandfriends.Honneth’sworkwasusedbecauseofitsemphasisontheimportanceof legalrecognitionandlargerstructuralfactorsinfacilitatingdailycoping. Conclusions:Understandinghowurbanrefugeescopebynegotiatingaccesstovariousformsofrecognitionin theabsenceoflegal-recognitionwillenableorganisationsworkingwiththemtoleveragesuchstrengthsand developrelevantprogrammes.Inparticular,buildingontheseexistingresourceswillleadtoculturallycompelling andsustainablecareforthesepopulations.
