Methods:Maleresearchers,whomayhavelookedyoungerthan18yearsold,visited60storesinEdmontonthat solddMS.TheresearchersaskedtheretailersquestionsaboutdMSanditshealthrisksrelativetothosefromother tobaccoproducts.TheyalsoattemptedtopurchasedMStoascertainwhetherretailerswouldaskforidentification toverifythattheywereatleast18yearsold. Results:Overall,theretailerswereonlymoderatelyknowledgeableaboutTHRandthedifferencesbetweendMS andothertobaccoproducts.Abouthalfoftheretailerscorrectlyindicatedthatsnusissaferthancigarettes;halfof whomknewitissaferbecauseitissmoke-free.Fiftypercentincorrectlybelievedthatsnuscausesoralcancer.Less thanfiftypercentindicatedthatdMSdiffersfromchewingtobaccobecauseitisinpouchesandisusedwithout spittingorchewing(makingitmorepromisingforTHR).Most(90%)oftheretailersaskedtheresearchersfor identificationwhensellingdMS. Conclusion:TobaccoretailersarepotentiallyimportantsourcesofinformationaboutTHR,particularlysincethere arerestrictionsonthepromotionofalltobaccoproducts(regardlessoftheactualhealthrisks)inCanada.This studyfoundthatmanyretailersinEdmontondonotknowtherelativehealthrisksofdifferenttobaccoproducts andarethereforeunabletopassonaccurateinformationtosmokers.
