Strikingly, in both structures a stretch of residues from the otherwise-disorderedNterminusofacrystallographicallyadjacentmoleculeisobservedbindingtoahydrophobiccavityon thesurfaceoftheprotein,therebyformingnon-covalentlinearpolymersofMinthecrystals.Whiletheoveralltopologyof theinteractionisconservedbetweenthetwostructures,themoleculardetailsoftheinteractionsarecompletelydifferent. The observed interactions provide a compelling model for the flexible self-assembly of the matrix protein during virion morphogenesisandmayalsomodulateinteractionswithhostproteins.
