Methods:Outpatients(215,924maleand9168female)whoreturnedmailedAUDIT-Cquestionnaireswere followedfor24monthsinthemedicalrecordforanyInternationalStatisticalClassificationofDiseasesandRelated HealthProblems(ICD-9)coderelatedtotrauma.Thetwo-yearprevalenceoftraumawasexaminedasafunctionof AUDIT-Cscores,withlow-leveldrinking(AUDIT-C1–4)asthereferencegroup.Menandwomenwereexamined separately,andage-stratifiedanalyseswereperformed. Results:HavinganAUDIT-Cscoreof9–12(indicatingseverealcoholmisuse)wasassociatedwithincreasedriskfor trauma.Mean(SD)agesformenandwomenwere68.2(11.5)and57.2(15.8),respectively.Age-stratifiedanalyses showedthat,formen≤50years,thosewithAUDIT-Cscores≥9hadanincreasedriskfortraumacomparedwiththose withAUDIT-Cscoresinthe1–4range(adjustedprevalence,25.7%versus20.8%,respectively;OR=1.24;95%confidence interval[CI],1.03–1.50).Formen≥65yearswithaveragecomorbidityandeducation,thosewithAUDIT-Cscoresof5–8 (adjustedprevalence,7.9%versus7.4%;OR=1.16;95%CI,1.02–1.31)and9–12(adjustedprevalence11.1%versus7.4%; OR=1.68;95%CI,1.30–2.17)wereatsignificantlyincreasedriskfortraumacomparedwithmen≥65yearsinthe referencegroup.HigherAUDIT-Cscoreswerenotassociatedwithincreasedriskoftraumaamongwomen.
