Wangetal.BMCPlantBiology2010,10:34 /1471-2229/10/34 RESEARCH ARTICLE OpenAccess Salicylicacidalleviatesdecreasesin photosynthesisunderheatstressandaccelerates recoveryingrapevineleaves Li-JunWang1,LingFan1,2,WayneLoescher3,WeiDuan1,Guo-JieLiu2,Jian-ShanCheng1,Hai-BoLuo1, Shao-HuaLi4* Abstract Background:Althoughtheeffectofsalicylicacid(SA)onphotosynthesisofplantsincludinggrapevineshasbeen investigated,verylittleisyetknownabouttheeffectsofSAoncarbonassimilationandseveralcomponentsofPSII electrontransport(donorside,reactioncenterandacceptorside).Inthisstudy,theimpactofSApretreatmenton photosynthesiswasevaluatedintheleavesofyounggrapevinesbeforeheatstress(25°C),duringheatstress(43°C for5h),andthroughthefollowingrecoveryperiod(25°C).Photosyntheticmeasuresincludedgasexchange parameters,PSIIelectrontransport,energydissipation,andRubiscoactivationstate.Thelevelsofheatshock proteins(HSPs)inthechloroplastwerealsoinvestigated. Results:SAdidnotsignificantly(P0.05)influencethenetphotosynthesisrate(Pn)ofleavesbeforeheatstress. But,SAdidalleviatedeclinesinPnandRubiscoactivitionstate,anddidnotalternegativechangesinPSII parameters(donorside,acceptorsideandreactioncenterQA)underheatstress.Followingheattreatment,the recoveryofPninSA-treatedleaveswasacceleratedcomparedwiththecontrol(H2O-treated)leaves,and,donor andacceptorparametersofPSIIinSA-treatedleavesrecoveredtonormallevelsmorerapidlythaninthecontrols. Rubisco,however,wasnotsignificantly(P0.05)influencedbySA.Beforeheatstress,SAdidnotaffectlevelof HSP21,buttheHSP21immunesignalincreasedinbothSA-treatedandcontrolleavesduringheatstress.During therecoveryperiod,HSP21levelsremainedhighthroughtheendoftheexperimentintheSA-treatedleaves,but decreasedincontrols. Conclusion:SApretreatmentalleviatedtheheatstressinduceddecreaseinPnmainlythroughmaintaininghigher Rubiscoactivitionstate,anditacceleratedtherecoveryofPnmainlythrougheffectsonPSIIfunction.Theseeffects ofSAmayberelatedinparttoenhancedlevelsofHSP21.
