Methods:Patientsweregroupedinto5categoriesatbaseline,6months,and12months.Shiftsbetween categorieswereassessedforindividualpatientsandfactorsassociatedwithimprovementwereanalyzed.1182 patientsfrom3clinicaltrialswereincludedinthecurrentanalysis. Results:Atbaseline,434(36.8%)patientshadminimalPositiveandNegativeSyndromeScale(PANSS)symptoms butseriouslyimpairedHeinrichCarpenter’sQualityofLifeScale(QLS)functioning;303(25.6%)hadmoderateto severesymptomsandseriouslyimpairedfunction;208(17.6%)hadmildtomoderatesymptomsbutgood functioning,and162(13.7%)hadminimalsymptomsandgoodfunctioning.Baselinecategorywassignificantly associatedwithClinicalGlobalImpression–Severity(CGI-S),extrapyramidalsymptoms,workingstatus,age,and numberofpreviousepisodes.ThemajorityofallpatientsstartingOLAItreatmentmaintainedorimproved(62%at 6monthsand52%at12months)theirsymptomandfunctioninglevelsonOLAImaintenancetreatment.Lessthan 8%ofthepatientsshowedworseningofsymptomsorfunctioning.Animprovementincategorywasassociated withhighPANSSpositiveandlowCGI-Sscoresatbaseline. Conclusions:Wepresentevidencethatacompositeassessmentofschizophrenicpatientsincludingsymptom severityandfunctioningishelpfulintheevaluationofmaintenancetreatmentoutcomes.Thisapproachcouldalso beusefulfortheassessmentoftreatmentoptionsinclinicalpractice.
