TheSummerActivityStudyofSomerville Youth(SASSY) AlisonTovar1*,KeithLividini1,ChristinaDEconomos1,SaraFolta1,JeanneGoldberg1,AvivaMust1,2 Abstract Background:ResearchindicatesthatintheUnitedStates,childrenexperiencehealthierBMIandfitnesslevels duringschoolvs.summer,butresearchislimited.Theprimarygoalofthispilotstudywastoassesswherechildren spendtheirtimeduringthemonthsthatschoolisnotinsessionandtolearnaboutthedifferenttypesofactivities theyengageinwithindifferentcaresettings.Asecondarygoalofthispilotstudywastolearnwhatchildreneat duringthesummermonths. Methods:Anine-weeksummerstudyof57parentsofsecondandthirdgradestudentswasconductedinan economically,racial/ethnicallyandlinguisticallydiverseUSurbancity.Weeklytelephoneinterviewsqueriedtime andactivitiesspenton/in1)themaincaregiver’scare2)someoneelse’scare3)vacation4)andcamp.Activities werecategorisedassedentary,light,moderate,orvigorous(0-3scale).Foreachchild,ameanactivitylevelwas calculatedandweightedforproportionoftimespentineachcaresituation,yieldingaweightedactivityindex. Onthelastphonecall,parentsansweredquestionsabouttheirchild’sdietoverthesummer.Twopost-studyfocus groupswereconductedtohelpinterpretfindingsfromtheweeklyactivityinterviews. Results:Themeanactivityindexwas1.05±0.32anddifferedbetweengender(p=0.07),education(p=0.08) andprimarylanguagespokeninthehousehold(p=0.01).Childrenwhospentagreaterpercentageoftimein parentcarehadonaveragealoweractivityindex(b=-0.004,p=0.01)whilechildrenwhospentagreater percentageoftimeincamphadahigheractivityindex(b=0.004,p=0.03).Whenstratifiedintotypeofcamp, percentageoftimespentinactivecampwasalsopositivelyassociatedwithmeanactivityindex(b=0.005, p=0.001).Withregardstodiet,afteradjustingformaternaleducation,childrenwhoattendedlessthanfive weeksofcampwerefourtimesmorelikelytoeattheirmealsinfrontoftheTVoften/almostallofthetime (OR=4.0,95%CI1.0-16.2,p0.06).
