Methods:Taildamageandtaillengthwasrecordedfor15,068pigsslaughteredduringthreeandfourconsecutive daysattwoslaughterhousesinSweden.Taildamagewasvisuallyscoredaccordingtoa6-pointscaleandtail lengthwasbothvisuallyscoredaccordingtoa5-pointscaleandrecordedastaillengthincentimetresforpigswith injuredorshortenedtails. Results:Thetotalprevalenceofinjuryorshorteningofthetailwas7.0%and7.2%inslaughterhouseAandB, respectively.Whenonlyconsideringpigswithhalforlessofthetailleft,thesepercentageswere1.5%and1.9%, whichisinlinewiththeprevalenceestimatedfromtheroutinerecordingsatslaughterinSweden.Ahigher percentageofmaleshadinjuredand/orshortenedtails,andmaleshadmoreseverelybittentailsthanfemales. Conclusions:WhilethecurrentmethodtorecordtaildamageinSwedenwasfoundtobereliableasamethodto identifyproblemfarms,itclearlyunderestimatestheactualprevalenceoftaildamage.Formonitoringand benchmarkingpurposes,bothinSwedenandinternationally,weproposethatathreegradedscaleincludingboth oldandnewtaildamagewouldbemoreappropriate.Thescaleconsistsofoneclassfornotaildamage,onefor mildtaildamage(injuredorshortenedtailwithmorethanhalfofthetailremaining)andoneforseveretail damage(halforlessofthetailremaining).
