MaterialsandMethods:Surveillanceofinfluenza-relatedmedicalencounterdataofactivedutymilitaryservicemembers stationedin theUnitedStatesduring theperiodof April–October2009 withcomparisonof pH1N1-confirmedcases and locationanddate-matchedcontrols.Crudeoddsratios(OR)andVEestimatesforimmunizedversusnon-immunizedwere calculatedaswellasadjustedOR(AOR)controllingforsex,agegroup,andhistoryofpriorinfluenzavaccination.Separate stratifiedVEanalysesbyvaccinetype(trivalentinactivated[TIV]orliveattenuated[LAIV]),agegroupsandhospitalization statuswerealsoperformed.FortheperiodofApril20toOctober15,2009,atotalof1,205casesofpH1N1-confirmedcases werereported,966(80%)amongmalesandoverone-half(58%)under25yearsofage.OverallVEforservicememberswas foundtobe45%(95%CI,33to55%).Immunizationwithpriorseason’sTIV(VE=44%,95%CI,32to54%)aswellasLAIV (VE=24%,95%CI,6to38%)werebothfoundtobeassociatedwithprotection.Ofsignificance,VEagainstaseveredisease outcomewashigher(VE=62%,95%CI,14to84%)thanagainstmilderoutcomes(VE=4
