SelfCareBehavioramongPatientswithDiabetesin Harari,EasternEthiopia:TheHealthBeliefModel Perspective KetemaAyele1.,BisratTesfa2.,LakewAbebe2.,TiztaTilahun3.,EshetuGirma2* 1Harar Health Science College, Harai, Ethiopia, 2Department of Health Education and Behavioral Sciences, Jimma University, Jimma, Ethiopia, 3Department of PopulationandFamilyHealth,JimmaUniversity,Jimma,Ethiopia Abstract Background:Diabetesmellitusisachronicdiseasethatrequireslifelongmedicaltreatmentsandalifestyleadjustment.To preventseriousmorbidityandmortality,itrequiresdedicationtodemandingself-carebehaviorsinmultipledomains.The objectiveofthisstudywastoidentifypredictorsofselfcarebehaviorsamongpatientswithdiabetes. Methods:Fromatotalof425followupdiabeticpatients,aquantitativecrosssectionalstudywasconductedamong222of themfromthreedifferenthospitalsinHarartown,fromMarchtoApril,2011.Thesamplewastakenusingsimplerandom sampling method. Data was collected using pretested questionnaire. Descriptive statistics multiple logistic regression analysiswerealsousedtoassessthepredicatorsofselfcarebehaviorsamongpatientswithdiabetes. Result:Majorityofthestudyrespondents134(60.4%)werefemaleandthemeanagewas49.7(SD614.7)years.Morethan half147(66.2%)ofthemweremedicallydiagnosedwithtype-2diabetes.208(93.7%)hadgeneralknowledgeaboutdiabetes and specific knowledge about diabetes self care 207(93.2%). Large proportion of them had moderate perceived susceptibility174(78.4%)andseverity112(50.5%).Morethanhalfoftherespondents149(67.1%)hadlessperceivedbarrier while only 30 (13.5%) of them had high self efficacy to self care practices related to diabetes mellitus. Only 87(39.2%) followedtherecommendedselfcarepracticesondiabetes. Conclusions: Patients with less frequent information were less likely to take diabetes self care. Patients who were more educated,middleincome,hadhighperceivedseverityofdiabetesandlessperceivedbarriertoselfcareweremorelikelyto takediabetesselfcare.Toincreasetheselfcarebehavior,diabetesmessagesshouldfoc
